Writing is essential for thinking, but it can be tough. Tools like ChatGPT and Sudowrite, which use artificial intelligence (AI) for natural language processing, are really helpful for improving writing and sparking ideas and I encourage you to explore their uses.
However, they shouldn't replace your own thinking or writing, especially in this course.
Think of AI tools as simpler versions of the help you'd get from a tutor. A tutor might ask questions to get your imagination going, suggest avoiding passive voice, or point out organizational issues, but they shouldn't write your work for you. The key difference is that AI apps are machines—they recognize patterns and reflect them back to us. They can't think on their own or think for you.
Using AI for writing essays and discussion posts can be helpful, but it's crucial to use it ethically and avoid plagiarism.

If there’s evidence of improper AI use, it will be considered Academic Dishonesty and could lead to a failing grade on an assignment or test, failing the course, and/or suspension from the college.
When you submit a paper to Turnitin, it checks for both plagiarism and artificial intelligence usage, and you can view your own report soon after submission of every paper.
I don't expect any issues with following these guidelines, but it's important to be clear about expectations upfront so we can focus on learning together this semester without worrying about where your work comes from.
